Plans are unveiled, federal funding commitment reaffirmed

A February milestone. An injection of suspense in June. And a moment of praise (and a chance to exhale) in October. This sequence provides a snapshot of the progress made in 2012 with regard to the replacement of flood-damaged arts facilities at the University of Iowa. The new Voxman School of Music will be located in downtown Iowa City, with its main entrance at the intersection of Burlington and Clinton streets. The structure will feature a largely glass exterior and second-floor auditoriums; substantial completion was projected for August 2016.

Hawkeye Marching Band attracts national recognition

Congratulations to the 250-member Hawkeye Marching Band and their director, Professor Kevin Kastens. The Hawkeye Marching Band was singled out on October 26 as one of the best college bands in the nation on CNN Headline News. Fans were able to nominate their favorite band; videos of the bands were then collected by the cable news network. ┬áBased on the submissions, CNN chose 14 bands from across the country for broadcast on their Morning Express show with Robin Meade (6:00-10:00AM, EST). The Big Ten was well-represented in the “Battle of the Bands.” In addition to the Hawkeye Marching Band, the University of Illinois, University of Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State University marching bands were also recognized.
